Empowering Special Minds Foundation is an Alberta not-for-profit organisation based in Calgary, supporting children with diverse developmental needs and their families.

Grounded in lived experience, we bring families together, connect them with resources, and create opportunities for children to learn, play and build relationships. We understand that finding support can take time, energy and persistence. Our purpose is to help families feel more connected and supported as they navigate that journey.

Our Story

Empowering Special Minds Foundation began with one family’s experience.

Our President, Ophelia, is a mother of two neurodivergent children. Following her first child’s autism diagnosis in 2021, she and her husband faced unfamiliar systems, countless applications and difficult decisions as they searched for the right support.

Over time, they learned to advocate for their child, build a support network and set meaningful goals. When their second child received a diagnosis, they approached the journey with greater understanding—but also a clearer awareness of the challenges families can face.

That experience inspired Empowering Special Minds: a place to share knowledge, build connections and help other families find their next step.

Today, that personal commitment guides the Foundation’s work. As we grow, we remain rooted in empathy, practical action and respect for each child’s individual strengths, needs and ways of connecting with the world.
